Part Way to Utah: the Forgotten Mormons surveys and Biblically analyzes the second largest branch of Mormonism, The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS). Part Way to Utah presents a brief historical sketch of Joseph Smith and the RLDS church, differentiating it from Salt Lake Mormonism. It then explains the development of 1) Joseph Smith's Book of Mormon and other scriptures, 2) his elaborate priesthood system, 3) his quest for an American Zion and 4) the doctrine that his church actually comprised "latter-day Israel." Each of these discussions is accompanied by careful Biblical analysis. The scriptural and doctrinal innovations of Joseph Smith comprise the foundation upon which virtually all of his churches rest. Unfortunately, they also constitute an irreconcilable departure from Biblical Christianity. This departure is consistently demonstrated throughout the book. The book concludes with some insights into the spiritual dilemma currently facing RLDS people and suggestions for ministry to them.
